Located in the town of the same name about 45 minutes from Winter Park, Grand Lake borders the south-western border of the beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park. There are public boat launches, marinas, docks and boat rentals available. A swimming beach can be accessed from the town, just beyond the quaint main street boardwalk.
This is the second-largest man-made lake in Colorado and is larger than Grand Lake. A popular lake for water-skiing, wakeboarding & fishing, you'll find Lake Granby on Hwy 34 about ten miles before the town of Grand Lake. There are also good picnic spots and public boat launches.
To really get off the beaten path for some boating recreation, consider Green Mountain Reservoir. It's a bit of a drive from Winter Park, about an hour and 15 minutes, but a well-kept secret. Built in the 1940s primarily to replace water that's diverted to the front range, it's now a fun spot for water sports, sailing, power boats & fishing.
This smaller body of water sits between Lake Granby and Grand Lake and is primarity used for fishing and power boating.
Located just outside of Kremmling, Wolford Mountain Reservoir is about an hour away from Winter Park. You'll find a boat launch, picnic areas and trails to explore. You can rent a pontoon boat, fishing boat, paddle boat or canoe here. It's another great lake for water sports, including jet skis and water skiing.
Paddleboarding is the fasted growing sport in the World, and the team at Stand Up Paddle Colorado are a huge part of the movement in the USA.Based out of Rancho Del Rio (30 minutes from Kremmling), the SUP tours travel along a sheltered stretch of the Colorado River offering incredible scenery and just enough waves to test your maneuvering and surfing skills.
WHAT IS SUP?
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a kind of a cross between surfing and canoeing. Using a large, specially designed surfboard and a long paddle, the rider stands facing forward and maneuvers the board using a combination of balance & paddle strokes.
IS SUP BOARDING DIFFICULT?
Everyone feels a little wobbly when they first try standing on a SUP board, but after about 20 minutes expert lesson by your friendly SUP guide, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how quickly you start to feel at home on the board. By the end of the trip, you'll most likely find yourself surfing e-bay for stand-up paddle boards!
CAN EVERYONE JOIN IN THE FUN?
Yes! To take part in the individual SUP tours, participants must be at least 13 years of age; younger kids (8+) can also join in the fun aboard the multi-person SUPSQUATCH (see right). Furthermore, any kids under 8 (or folks that just don't feel comfortable doing SUP) can cruise down the river watch the fun from the comfort of a guided raft.
